Summary

Anorexia nervosa patients show deficits in smell discrimination and threshold, but not identification. This suggests reduced olfactory perception may impact eating disorder therapy.

Background:

Young patients with anorexia nervosa report reduced pleasure and impaired smell perception during eating.
Previous studies on olfactory identification in eating disorders found no significant deficits, suggesting a need for more detailed testing methods.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate olfactory deficits in female patients with anorexia nervosa using a detailed olfactory testing method.
To compare olfactory abilities between anorectic patients and healthy individuals.

Main Methods:

Utilized all three subtests of the "Sniffin' Sticks" smell test for detailed olfactory assessment.
Compared results from 17 female anorectic patients with 15 healthy females.

Significant deficits were detected in the odour discrimination and odour threshold subtests in anorectic patients.

Conclusions:

Reduced olfactory perception, specifically in discrimination and threshold, is a potential deficit in anorexia nervosa.
These olfactory impairments may have implications for understanding and treating eating disorders.
