Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Exercise Physiology
  • Rehabilitation Science

Background:

  • Aging in nursing home residents is associated with functional decline.
  • Maintaining physical function and mental well-being is crucial for this population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of a 6-month regular exercise program on the functional performance of elderly individuals in a nursing home.
  • To assess changes in lower-limb function, strength, proprioception, mental status, and depression symptoms.

Main Methods:

  • A 6-month exercise intervention was conducted with 40 nursing home residents (aged 60-99).
  • Participants were divided into an exercise group and a control group.
  • Measurements included obstacle course performance, lower-limb function tests, gait velocity, knee extensor strength, proprioception, Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS).

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • The exercise group demonstrated significant improvements in obstacle course scores, lower-limb function, gait velocity, knee extensor strength, and GDS scores.
  • The control group showed significant decreases in qualitative obstacle course scores, lower-limb function, gait velocity, MMSE, and GDS scores.

Conclusions:

  • A 6-month regular exercise program is effective in improving functional performance and reducing depression symptoms in elderly nursing home residents.
  • Exercise interventions can mitigate age-related functional decline and positively impact mental health in this demographic.
