Summary

Continuous intra-abdominal pressure (CIAP) monitoring via a three-way catheter irrigation port accurately measures intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) with excellent agreement to intermittent measurements. This simple method should replace the current labor-intensive technique for improved patient care.

Background:

  • Abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) is a critical complication in high-risk ICU patients.
  • Current intermittent intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) monitoring is labor-intensive and may delay recognition of critical changes.
  • A novel method for continuous IAP (CIAP) measurement is proposed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To validate the accuracy and agreement of CIAP measurement using the irrigation port of a three-way urinary catheter compared to standard intermittent IAP (IIAP) measurement.
  • To assess the feasibility of continuous monitoring in general surgical and trauma ICU patients.
