Summary

The Generalized Electronic Interviewing System (GEIS) enables rapid survey development. A hybrid approach using GEIS, combining computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) and interactive voice response (IVR), yielded more accurate alcohol consumption data than CATI alone.

Area of Science:

  • Computer-assisted survey methodology
  • Psychometric data collection tools

Background:

  • Traditional survey methods can be time-consuming and require programming expertise.
  • Developing flexible and efficient electronic interviewing systems is crucial for modern research.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce the Generalized Electronic Interviewing System (GEIS) for developing and conducting surveys.
  • To evaluate the performance of GEIS using computer-assisted telephone interview (CATI), interactive voice response (IVR), and a hybrid method.

Main Methods:

  • GEIS utilizes a common script syntax for CATI and IVR modes, eliminating the need for programming.
  • Scripts define question texts, answer options, branching logic, and IVR-specific elements.
  • SAS Version 8.0 was required for data management, with data stored in SAS datasets.

Main Results:

  • GEIS facilitated rapid interview development through scripted questionnaires.
  • CATI results showed expected deviations for sensitive questions.
  • The hybrid CATI-IVR method provided more accurate telephone survey data on alcohol consumption compared to CATI alone, although IVR alone yielded a small sample size.

Conclusions:

  • GEIS offers a flexible and efficient platform for electronic survey development and deployment.
  • The hybrid CATI-IVR approach shows promise for improving data accuracy in telephone surveys, particularly for sensitive topics.
  • GEIS is available for download from the Psychonomic Society Web archive.
