Abstract:
The reaction of various sp2- and sp-hybridized organolithium species with bromoketone 1 is presented. In most cases, control over the course of the process is possible and products from simple addition, addition followed by a quasi-Favorskii rearrangement or addition, rearrangement, and addition can be selectively prepared.

Halogenation of Alkenes
Consider the bromination of cyclopentene. Molecular bromine is polarized in the proximity of the π electrons of cyclopentene. An electrophilic bromine atom adds across the double bond, forming a cyclic bromonium ion intermediate.
