Pseudoxanthoma-like late-onset focal dermal elastosis.

Summary

Background:

Pseudoxanthoma elasticum and solar elastosis are common conditions affecting elastic fibers.
Distinguishing between similar dermatological conditions is crucial for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Observation:

A 73-year-old woman developed asymptomatic, coalescent, pale yellow lesions over 10 years.
The lesions formed a cobblestone pattern on the neck, upper trunk, and axillae, mimicking pseudoxanthoma elasticum.

Findings:

Skin biopsies revealed focal upper dermal elastosis with an increase in structurally normal elastic fibers.
Histopathology excluded both pseudoxanthoma elasticum and solar elastosis.

Implications:

This case highlights late-onset focal dermal elastosis as a distinct clinicopathological entity.
Recognition of this under-documented condition is important for dermatologists.
Accurate diagnosis prevents misclassification and guides appropriate patient management.
