Observations on in-house ergonomics training for first-line supervisors

Advantages of and approaches to in-house training of first-line supervisory personnel in the principles of ergonomics are discussed. Particular attention is given to the one- to three-day short course approach. The short course approach is illustrated by a case study summarising the authors' experiences in one multi-plant corporation over a period of five years. It is concluded that supervisory personnel typically respond positively to ergonomics instruction; that, to be successful, the course material must relate to situations in which the supervisor can exercise some control; and that the one- to three-day course format appears appropriate for such instruction.
