Area of Science:

  • Nephrology
  • Urology
  • Surgical Case Reports

Background:

  • Spontaneous renal fistula to the skin is an uncommon clinical presentation.
  • Risk factors include prior renal surgery, trauma, tumors, and chronic urinary tract infections with abscess formation.

Observation:

  • A 62-year-old woman presented with a 2-year history of urine leakage from the lumbar skin.
  • Fistulography confirmed drainage to the renal collecting system and suggested ipsilateral renal lithiasis.

Findings:

  • The patient underwent a simple nephrectomy for the condition.
  • Post-operative recovery was uneventful.

Implications:

  • This case underscores the importance of considering renal pathology in patients with unexplained cutaneous urinary fistulas.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Nephrectomy can be an effective treatment for complex renal fistulas, especially when associated with lithiasis.
