Abstract:
Image reconstruction is a technique based on reprocessing raw data or native images to enhance their diagnostic impact, simplify their analysis, or establish a more comprehensive picture. Applied to computed tomography, the only technique examined here, image reconstruction is at the crossroads between two apparently contradictory affirmations, i.e. all information is contained in the cross-sectional images, and image processing makes multiple-plane segmentation of an anatomic volume obsolete. In 2004, reality associates these two affirmations in a combination weighted according to the clinical situation. Clinicians prescribing imaging explorations must be well aware of recent advances in technology and must keep up to date on the different ways imaging data can be exploited, particularly for upcoming applications for functional, metabolic, and molecular imaging.
