Laparoscopic Pyeloplasty: Always Dismembered?

Laparoscopic pyeloplasty is an effective treatment for pyeloureteral junction obstruction. This minimally invasive approach offers good outcomes for patients with hydronephrosis and stenosis.

  • Pyeloureteral junction (PUJ) obstruction is a common cause of hydronephrosis.
  • Surgical intervention is often required to restore proper urine flow.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and outcomes of laparoscopic pyeloplasty for treating PUJ obstruction.

Summary:

  • 14 patients with PUJ obstruction underwent laparoscopic repair between 2001 and 2004.
  • The Anderson-Hynes pyeloplasty technique was used in most cases.
  • Mean operative time was 199.7 minutes with a mean hospital stay of 4.63 days. Postoperative complications included one case of double J catheter obstruction and one recurrence of stenosis.

Impact:

  • Laparoscopic pyeloplasty is a viable and effective surgical option for PUJ obstruction.
