Summary

This case study shows that persistent prosopagnosia, or face blindness, only develops after bilateral brain damage affecting both hemispheres. Initial right-sided strokes caused visual neglect but not face blindness.

Background:

Observation:

  • A 54-year-old male experienced three sequential cerebrovascular accidents (strokes).
  • The first two strokes damaged the right posterior parietal, right temporal, and entire right occipital lobes, resulting in left homonymous hemianopsia and left visual neglect.
  • The third stroke affected the left parieto-occipital lobe, leading to the immediate onset of persistent prosopagnosia.

Findings:

  • The patient did not develop prosopagnosia after unilateral right-hemisphere damage, despite significant visual field deficits.
