Summary

Preeclampsia in pregnancy is linked to higher thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels, even when other thyroid hormones remain normal. Elevated TSH may indicate an increased risk for developing preeclampsia.

Background:

  • Thyroid function during normal pregnancy is well-documented.
  • Limited data exists on thyroid function in complicated pregnancies, such as preeclampsia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate thyroid hormonal levels in pregnant women with preeclampsia in their third trimester.
  • To compare thyroid function between preeclamptic and normotensive pregnant women.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study involving 82 preeclamptic women and 82 matched controls.
  • Evaluation of serum thyroid hormones: free triiodothyronine (Free T3), free thyroxine (Free T4), and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH).
  • Statistical analysis included t-tests, Mann-Whitney, chi-square, and Pearson correlation.

Main Results:

  • Significantly higher mean TSH levels were observed in the preeclamptic group compared to controls (p<0.001).
  • Approximately 40% of preeclamptic women had TSH levels > 5 mIU/ml, versus 12.2% in controls.
  • An elevated TSH (> 5 mIU/ml) was associated with a 4.85-fold increased odds of preeclampsia.

Conclusions:

  • Preeclampsia is associated with elevated serum TSH levels, independent of free T3 and free T4 levels.
  • Abnormal TSH titres may represent a risk factor for the development of preeclampsia.
