Summary

This meta-analysis of 997 articles reveals that while most work commitment dimensions are intercorrelated, their impact on outcomes like job satisfaction and performance is generally small. Different forms of commitment show similar correlation patterns with these outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Organizational Psychology
  • Industrial-Organizational Psychology
  • Human Resources Management

Background:

  • Work commitment is a multifaceted construct with various dimensions.
  • Understanding the interrelationships between these dimensions and their impact on key workplace outcomes is crucial for organizational effectiveness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To meta-analytically cumulate correlations among different dimensions of work commitment.
  • To determine the impact of work commitment dimensions and subdimensions on job satisfaction, job performance, turnover intentions, and turnover.

Main Methods:

  • A meta-analysis was conducted on an extensive body of literature, encompassing 997 articles.
  • 94 meta-analyses were performed to examine correlations between 24 commitment constructs and 4 outcome variables.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • A positive manifold of correlations was observed, suggesting a common psychological construct underlying most commitment forms, except for calculative, continuance, and union commitment.
  • Most of the 94 meta-analyzed correlations were small, indicating limited concept redundancy.
  • Different commitment forms exhibited similar patterns of correlations with the outcome variables.

Conclusions:

  • The findings suggest a degree of convergence among work commitment dimensions, despite their distinctiveness.
  • The practical implications of different commitment forms on workplace outcomes appear to be broadly similar, though generally small in magnitude.
