Summary

Anetoderma, a skin condition, may appear early in individuals with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. This suggests a potential autoimmune link in the early stages of HIV disease.

Observation:

  • Three HIV-positive men developed anetoderma.
  • Anetoderma onset occurred early in HIV infection for these patients.
  • In two cases, anetoderma preceded other HIV symptoms; in one, it appeared with T-cell counts over 200/mm3.

Findings:

  • Anetoderma can manifest early in the course of HIV infection.
  • The development of anetoderma in HIV may be linked to autoimmune processes.

Implications:

  • Anetoderma could serve as an early indicator of HIV infection.
  • Further research into the autoimmune pathogenesis of anetoderma in HIV is warranted.
