Summary

Breast radiologists often do not recall interpreting mammograms with cancer, even when they correctly detected it. This finding suggests screening mammograms can be used in observer performance studies.

Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Medical Imaging
  • Breast Cancer Detection

Background:

  • Accurate interpretation of screening mammograms is crucial for early breast cancer detection.
  • Radiologist recall of prior interpretations can influence diagnostic performance.
  • Understanding memory effects in mammography interpretation is important for observer studies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate breast radiologists' ability to recognize mammograms showing cancers they previously interpreted.
  • To compare radiologist performance on mammograms interpreted by themselves versus those interpreted by other radiologists.

Main Methods:

  • Two experiments involved breast imagers reviewing screening mammograms.
  • Mammograms included cancers previously detected or missed by the radiologist, and non-cancer recalls.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Radiologists' recall of prior interpretation and suspicion for cancer were assessed; performance was compared using chi-square analysis.
  • Main Results:

    • Most radiologists (7/8) did not remember interpreting any mammograms in the study.
    • One radiologist recalled one mammogram but interpreted it incorrectly.
    • No significant difference in performance was observed between mammograms interpreted by the radiologists themselves and those interpreted by others (P = .60).

    Conclusions:

    • Breast radiologists generally do not remember interpreting mammograms showing cancer, regardless of their initial interpretation accuracy.
    • Screening mammograms can be effectively utilized in observer performance studies where the interpreting radiologist acts as an observer.
