Abstract:
Several humoral factors including parathyroid hormone and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25 (OH)(2)D] have been shown to participate in the regulation of serum calcium (Ca) and 1,25 (OH)(2)D levels. Recently, fibroblast growth factor-23 was identified as a novel humoral factor that can affect vitamin D metabolism. However, there still remain several questions such as the mechanism of low 1,25 (OH)(2)D level in patients with humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy that cannot be explained by actions of currently known humoral factors.
