Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Pediatric Surgery

Background:

  • Calcified brain abscesses are uncommon, particularly large ones.
  • This case involves a pediatric patient with a longstanding frontal fistula.

Observation:

  • A six-year-old female presented with a three-year history of a left frontal region fistula.
  • The fistula resulted from being gored by a cow.
  • Staphylococcus aureus was identified in the abscess pus three years after the initial injury.

Findings:

  • Surgical intervention was performed for the large calcified brain abscess.
  • Postoperative neurological recovery was positive.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the possibility of rare, large calcified brain abscesses developing from seemingly minor initial trauma.
  • Early diagnosis and surgical management are crucial for favorable outcomes in pediatric brain abscesses.
  • The identification of Staphylococcus aureus underscores the importance of microbiological analysis in guiding treatment.
