Summary

Hypersensitivity reactions to oxaliplatin can be managed. This study reports successful desensitization to oxaliplatin using an 8-hour regimen, allowing continued chemotherapy for metastatic colon cancer.

Background:

  • Hypersensitivity reactions to platinum-based chemotherapy, such as oxaliplatin, are a clinical challenge.

Observation:

  • A patient with metastatic colon cancer developed hypersensitivity to oxaliplatin during treatment.
  • The reaction, characterized by diaphoresis, hypotension, and gastrointestinal symptoms, was attributed to oxaliplatin.

Findings:

  • An 8-hour inpatient desensitization protocol was successfully implemented for oxaliplatin.
  • The patient completed three additional cycles of full-dose oxaliplatin chemotherapy without recurrence of hypersensitivity symptoms.

Implications:

  • Oxaliplatin desensitization is a viable option for patients experiencing hypersensitivity reactions.
