Summary

This case study presents acute esophageal necrosis, a rare condition characterized by a "black esophagus" finding during endoscopy. The patient, with advanced cervical cancer, unfortunately succumbed to complications.

  • The patient was treated with proton pump inhibitors and parenteral nutrition.
  • Despite treatment, the patient died three days post-admission due to septic metabolic disorder.
  • Autopsy confirmed esophageal mucosal necrosis extending into the muscularis mucosae.

Implications:

  • The "black esophagus" finding has a heterogeneous origin and is rare, occurring in 0.0125% to 0.28% of cases.
  • This case highlights the association between esophageal necrosis and advanced cervical cancer.
  • Understanding the clinical, endoscopic, and histologic features is crucial for diagnosis and management.
