Many elderly dementia patients in Ireland have unmet needs, particularly in behavior and social interaction. Services should be developed based on identified needs, not just diagnoses, to improve care for community-dwelling individuals.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Psychiatry
  • Dementia Care

Background:

  • Traditional resource allocation for dementia care often relies on diagnostic categories and perceived needs.
  • Accurate identification of unmet needs in community-dwelling elderly individuals with dementia is crucial for effective service planning.
  • This study aimed to characterize the needs of elderly dementia patients referred to an Irish old age psychiatry service.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify the unmet needs of community-dwelling elderly patients with dementia.
  • To identify specific domains with high levels of unmet need.
  • To inform the development of targeted dementia care services.

Main Methods:

  • Eighty-two consecutively referred patients with ICD-10 dementia diagnoses were assessed.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The Care Needs Assessment Pack for Dementia (CareNap-D) was utilized for assessment.
  • Needs were evaluated across seven domains: health, self-care, social interaction, cognition, behavior, housecare, and community living.
  • Main Results:

    • Patients had a mean of 33 identified needs, with approximately one-third unmet.
    • High unmet needs were observed in behavior/mental state (84% for agitation) and social interaction (79% for activity participation).
    • Repetitive questioning was unmet in 88% of affected individuals; older age, lower MMSE, and living alone correlated with greater unmet needs.

    Conclusions:

    • Significant unmet needs exist within the community-dwelling elderly dementia population.
    • Service development must prioritize actual identified needs over perceived needs.
    • A comprehensive spectrum of services is essential to address the multifaceted needs of this population.
