Summary

Dystrophic calcification and ossification in leg veins primarily affect the intima or thrombi, unlike arteries where media calcification is common. This study examines rare cases of venous wall ossification.

Area of Science:

  • Vascular Pathology
  • Histology
  • Venous Disease

Context:

  • Dystrophic calcification and ossification are observed in leg veins.
  • Superficial vein calcification is common; deep vein calcification is occasional.
  • Venous wall ossification is a rare finding.

Purpose:

  • To analyze and histologically examine cases of dystrophic calcification and/or ossification in leg veins.
  • To differentiate venous calcification/ossification from arterial patterns.

Summary:

  • Eight cases of leg vein calcification/ossification were histologically studied.
  • Findings indicate calcification and ossification involve the intima or organized thrombus, sparing the media.
  • This contrasts with Mönckeberg's mediasclerosis in arteries, which affects the media.

Impact:

  • Provides insights into the rare phenomenon of venous wall ossification.
  • Highlights differences in calcification patterns between arteries and veins.
  • Discusses potential clinical consequences of venous calcification and ossification.
