Objective:
To study the effects and mechanism of Huchang Qingfei pellets on immune function in rats infected with mycoplasma pneumoniae.
Method:
A rat model of mycoplasmal pneumonia (MP) was developed in repeated intranasal infectious routes and then the humoral and cellular immunocompetences were detected by radioimmunoassay, immune-turbidimetry and flow cytometry.
Result:
The levels of serum IgG,IgM and IL-2, IL-6 were enhinced obviously, the complement C3 and TNF-alpha were decreased and the ratio of CD4+ /CD8+ was improved significantly in the Huchang groups as compared with MP model group.
Conclusion:
Huchang Qingfei pellets can reinforce immune function via preventing both cellular and humoral immunity from depression in the rats with MP.
Insights
Huchang Qingfei pellets were found to enhance immune function in rats with mycoplasmal pneumonia. This traditional Chinese medicine treatment improved both cellular and humoral immunity, counteracting the infection-induced depression.
Area of Science:
- Immunology
- Pharmacology
- Respiratory Medicine
Context:
- Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) infection causes significant immune dysfunction.
- Understanding the immunomodulatory effects of traditional Chinese medicine is crucial for developing new therapeutic strategies.
Purpose:
- To investigate the effects of Huchang Qingfei pellets on the immune system of rats infected with MP.
- To elucidate the underlying mechanisms by which these pellets modulate immune responses.
Summary:
- Rats with MP exhibited altered immune parameters, including decreased immunoglobulin and cytokine levels, and an imbalanced CD4+/CD8+ T-cell ratio.
- Treatment with Huchang Qingfei pellets significantly improved serum IgG, IgM, IL-2, and IL-6 levels.
- The pellets also modulated complement C3 and TNF-alpha levels and restored the CD4+/CD8+ ratio, indicating a broad immunomodulatory effect.
Impact:
- Huchang Qingfei pellets demonstrate potential as an immunotherapeutic agent for mycoplasmal pneumonia.
- The findings suggest a mechanism involving the prevention of both cellular and humoral immune depression.
- This study contributes to the scientific validation of traditional Chinese medicine in treating respiratory infections.
