Summary

Serum leptin levels were lower in patients with depression and comorbid obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and depression, but not in pure OCD patients. These findings suggest reduced leptin is linked to depression, not solely OCD.

Background:

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a debilitating mental health condition.
  • Leptin, a hormone involved in appetite and metabolism, has been implicated in various psychiatric disorders.
  • The role of leptin in the etiopathogenesis of OCD remains unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate serum leptin levels in patients with pure OCD, pure depression, and comorbid OCD and depression.
  • To determine if altered leptin levels have etiopathogenetic significance in OCD.
  • To explore the relationship between leptin, cortisol, and demographic factors in these patient groups.

Main Methods:

  • Serum leptin and cortisol levels were measured in 44 OCD patients (27 pure OCD, 17 comorbid OCD+depression), 38 depressed patients, and 30 healthy controls.

    • Statistically significant lower serum leptin levels were observed in patients with comorbid OCD and depression (OCD+D) and pure depression (D) compared to the control group.

    • Leptin alterations may not have a primary etiopathogenetic role in pure OCD.
    • These findings suggest OCD might be a heterogeneous disorder with biological links to anxiety and affective disorders.
