Summary

Skin testing (ST) is more sensitive than serum specific IgE tests (RAST) for indoor allergens like D. farinae, cockroach, cat, and dog. ST is superior for detecting sensitization to cat and dog allergens, even without reported exposure.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the reactivity of skin testing (ST) with serum specific IgE antibodies (RAST) to common indoor allergens.
  • To evaluate the diagnostic performance of ST versus RAST in patients with allergic rhinitis and/or asthma.

Main Methods:

  • 118 patients with allergic rhinitis/asthma underwent percutaneous and intradermal skin testing.
  • Serum samples were tested for specific IgE antibodies using the radioallergosorbent test (RAST).

    • Agreement between ST and RAST ranged from 52.2% to 62.2%; correlation was weak to moderate (r = 0.24–0.54).

    • Skin testing (ST) is more sensitive than RAST for diagnosing sensitization to common indoor allergens.
    • ST is particularly effective for identifying sensitization to cat and dog allergens.
    • Positive results from ST and RAST showed poor correlation in score, suggesting complementary diagnostic value.
