Summary

Systemic hypertension, open-angle glaucoma, and male sex are significant risk factors for retinal vein occlusions. Other common conditions like diabetes were not found to be significant risk factors in this study.

Background:

  • Retinal vein occlusions (RVOs) are a significant cause of vision loss.
  • Identifying risk factors for RVOs is crucial for prevention and management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between various systemic and ocular conditions and the risk of developing retinal vein occlusions.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study was conducted with 87 patients diagnosed with RVOs and 85 age- and sex-matched controls.
  • Data on potential risk factors including systemic hypertension, glaucoma, diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular disease history were collected.
  • Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the significance of identified risk factors.

  • Systemic hypertension (odds ratio [OR], 3.86) and open-angle glaucoma (OR, 2.89) were found to be highly significant risk factors for RVOs.
  • Male sex was also a significant risk factor (OR, 2.61).
  • Diabetes mellitus, history of coronary artery disease or stroke, and family history of these conditions were not significant risk factors in this cohort.

Conclusions:

  • Systemic hypertension, open-angle glaucoma, and male sex are key risk factors associated with retinal vein occlusions.
  • The risk factors for both branch retinal vein occlusion and central retinal vein occlusion appear to be identical.
