Summary

Laparoscopic surgery adoption increased significantly for appendectomy, cholecystectomy, and perforated peptic ulcer repair in Hong Kong. Despite widespread use, significant variations in adoption rates were noted across hospitals.

Area of Science:

  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Surgical Outcomes
  • Healthcare Management

Background:

  • Laparoscopic surgery, once controversial, is increasingly accepted for emergency procedures.
  • This study examines the adoption of laparoscopic techniques for common emergencies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the diffusion of laparoscopic surgery for appendectomy, cholecystectomy, and perforated peptic ulcer (PPU) repair.
  • To analyze trends and variations in laparoscopic surgery adoption in Hong Kong.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of a central hospital database in Hong Kong (1998-2002).
  • Inclusion of data from 14 Hospital Authority (HA) hospitals.
  • Verification of data through operation and discharge records.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Laparoscopic procedures increased significantly, reaching over 50% for appendectomies and cholecystectomies by 2002.
  • Laparoscopic surgery was associated with lower mortality and shorter hospital stays.
  • Wide variation in adoption rates (3.7%–73.1%) observed across hospitals, unrelated to surgical volume.

Conclusions:

  • Laparoscopic surgery has diffused widely for common surgical emergencies in Hong Kong.
  • Significant inter-hospital variation in adoption rates necessitates further investigation and potential standardization efforts.
  • Promoting consistent adoption of safe laparoscopic techniques is recommended.
