Gastrointestinal symptoms are common in infants, affecting over half within six months. Low birth weight and gestational age are key risk factors, while feeding habits have minimal impact except for constipation linked to less breastfeeding.

Background:

Infant gastrointestinal disturbances are common but poorly understood.
Limited data exists on the frequency and predisposing factors of these issues.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine the incidence of common infant gastrointestinal symptoms in the first six months.
To analyze the influence of various factors on symptom development.

Main Methods:

A prospective study involving 150 pediatricians and 2879 infants followed from birth to six months.
Evaluation of symptoms including constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, regurgitation, failure to thrive, and colic.
Data collection through clinical check-ups and monthly examinations.
