Area of Science:

  • Behavioral Science
  • Public Health
  • Digital Health

Background:

  • Problem drinking affects a significant portion of the population.
  • Traditional treatments for problem drinking have limitations in reach and accessibility.
  • Internet-based interventions offer a scalable approach to address problem drinking.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate an Internet-based intervention for problem drinkers.
  • To compare the effectiveness of an Internet intervention alone versus combined with a self-help book.
  • To assess changes in drinking behavior and consequences over a 3-month period.

Main Methods:

  • A preliminary evaluation of an Internet-based intervention was conducted.
  • 83 participants completed baseline and 3-month follow-up surveys.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Participants were randomized to receive either the Internet intervention alone or combined with a self-help book.
  • Main Results:

    • Minimal support was found for the Internet intervention alone.
    • Participants receiving the Internet intervention plus a self-help book reported significantly less drinking.
    • The combined intervention group also experienced fewer negative consequences related to alcohol consumption.

    Conclusions:

    • Combining Internet interventions with self-help books may enhance outcomes for problem drinkers.
    • Internet-based personalized feedback may not be effective as a stand-alone intervention.
    • Further research is needed to establish the efficacy of these digital health approaches.
