Chronic urticaria (CU) is frequently linked to thyroid autoimmunity. Evaluating thyroid antibodies (Ab) and function is crucial for diagnosing and managing CU patients, as abnormal results were common in this study.

Area of Science:

  • Immunology
  • Endocrinology
  • Dermatology

Background:

  • Chronic urticaria (CU) is a common dermatological condition.
  • Potential links between autoimmune thyroid disease and CU require further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the prevalence of thyroid autoimmunity and thyroid dysfunction in patients with chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU).
  • To evaluate the association between thyroid-specific antibodies and CIU.

Main Methods:

  • Studied 56 CIU patients and 56 matched controls.
  • Assessed antibodies to thyroglobulin (TG) and thyroid peroxidase (TPO).
  • Measured thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free triiodothyronine (FT3), and free thyroxine (FT4).
  • Performed an intra-dermal self-test using patient serum.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Thyroid antibodies (TG Ab and TPO Ab) were detected in 28.5% of CIU patients.
  • Thyroid function tests were largely normal, with minor TSH and FT3 abnormalities in a few patients.
  • The intra-dermal self-test was positive in 4 patients.
  • No thyroid abnormalities were found in the control group.

Conclusions:

  • Chronic urticaria is significantly associated with thyroid autoimmunity.
  • Routine evaluation of thyroid antibodies and function is recommended for all patients presenting with chronic urticaria.
