Summary

Vacuum extraction delivery showed no increased risk of neonatal herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection. HSV on newborn scalps may be colonization, not infection, regardless of delivery method.

Background:

  • Herpes simplex virus (HSV) poses potential risks to newborns.
  • The association between operative vaginal delivery, specifically vacuum extraction, and neonatal HSV infection requires clarification.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate a potential link between vacuum extraction delivery and an elevated risk of neonatal herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional, descriptive, controlled study compared 50 women undergoing vacuum extraction with 50 undergoing spontaneous delivery.
  • Maternal genital and neonatal scalp cultures for HSV were performed on all participants.

Main Results:

  • In the vacuum extraction group, 4% of newborns had positive HSV cultures (2 with vesicles, 2 without).
  • In the spontaneous delivery group, 8% of mothers and newborns had positive HSV cultures.
  • No significant difference in HSV positivity was observed between the two delivery groups.

Conclusions:

  • Herpes simplex virus detected on newborn scalps may frequently represent colonization rather than active infection.
  • Vacuum extraction delivery does not appear to increase the risk of neonatal HSV infection.
