Summary

Split cord malformation (SCM) is a rare spinal cord defect. Early prophylactic surgery is recommended for all SCM patients, even those without symptoms, to prevent neurological deficits.

Background:

  • Split cord malformation (SCM) is a rare congenital anomaly of the spinal cord.

  • To report the surgical outcomes of the largest series of split cord malformation (SCM) patients to date.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of prophylactic surgical intervention in SCM.

  • Retrospective analysis of 203 patients with SCM operated between March 1989 and October 2003.
