Area of Science:

  • Medical Science
  • Obstetrics
  • Perinatology

Background:

  • Conjoined twinning is a rare complication of monozygotic pregnancies.
  • Parapagothoracopagus represents a specific and infrequent subtype of conjoined twins.

Observation:

  • A case of conjoined triplets with tricephalus, tetrabrachius, and tetrapus parapagothoracopagus is presented.
  • Antenatal diagnosis was achieved at 22 weeks gestation using 2D ultrasonography and MRI.
  • Pregnancy termination via hysterotomy allowed for postnatal confirmation of the diagnosis.

Findings:

  • The conjoined triplets exhibited a rare parapagothoracopagus configuration.
  • Advanced imaging modalities enabled early antenatal detection.
  • Postnatal examination confirmed the complex conjoined anatomy.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of advanced imaging in diagnosing rare congenital anomalies.
  • Understanding such complex cases contributes to the literature on conjoined twinning.
  • Further research into the etiology and management of conjoined twins is warranted.
