E3LSI research: an essential element of biodefense

Biodefense research funding is increasing, but its ethical, economic, environmental, legal, and social implications (E(3)LSI) are overlooked. A dedicated E(3)LSI research program is proposed to ensure responsible bioterror preparedness.
