Female fibromyalgia patients experience sexual dysfunction. Coexisting major depression does not worsen this sexual dysfunction, indicating a need for sexual health assessment in fibromyalgia care.
Area of Science:
- Reproductive Health
- Psychiatry
- Rheumatology
Background:
- Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain and fatigue.
- Sexual dysfunction is a common but often overlooked issue in women with FM.
- The impact of coexisting major depression (MD) on sexual function in FM patients requires further investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate sexual function in females diagnosed with fibromyalgia.
- To determine if coexisting major depression (MD) exacerbates sexual dysfunction in women with FM.
Main Methods:
- A cohort of 100 female participants, including those with FM only, FM with MD, and healthy controls, were assessed.
- Diagnoses of MD were confirmed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV.
- Sexual function was evaluated using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), while pain and quality of life were measured using the Lattinen Pain Scale and Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire.
Main Results:
- Female patients with FM, with or without MD, exhibited significantly lower mean FSFI scores compared to healthy controls (p = 0.001).
- No significant difference in FSFI scores was observed between the FM only and FM plus MD groups.
- A moderate negative correlation was found between pain severity and sexual function in both FM groups (p < 0.05).
Conclusions:
- Female patients with fibromyalgia experience distinct sexual dysfunction.
- Coexisting major depression does not appear to have an additional negative impact on sexual function in women with FM.
- Routine evaluation of sexual function is recommended for women with FM to enhance their overall quality of life.
