Bilateral extradural hematomas are rare complications of head injuries. Surgical treatment is primary, but prognosis depends on the patient's neurological state, with a 50% mortality in this series.

Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Trauma Surgery

Context:

  • Epidural hematomas frequently complicate closed head injuries.
  • Bilateral extradural hematomas are uncommon, often acute, and linked to severe trauma and high mortality rates.

Purpose:

  • To report six cases of bilateral extradural hematomas.
  • To determine the incidence of bilateral extradural hematomas among surgically treated cases (2.5%).

Summary:

  • The series included 5 males and 1 female, with a mean age of 32.6 years.
  • Hematomas crossed the midline in 3 cases and were in different locations bilaterally in the other 3.
  • All patients had skull fractures and underwent surgical intervention; mortality was 50%.

Impact:

  • Highlights the rarity and severity of bilateral extradural hematomas.
