Summary

A rare pediatric lung abscess secondary to Staphylococcus infection was successfully treated conservatively. This case highlights effective antibiotic management and monitoring for pediatric lung disease.

Background:

Lung abscess is an uncommon but complex suppurative pulmonary disease.
Pediatric cases are rare, often requiring intricate treatment strategies.

Observation:

A 10-year-old boy presented with a lung abscess secondary to Staphylococcus infection originating from a finger panaritium.
Diagnosis was confirmed via roentgenographic examination showing a cavitary lesion with fluid level and alveolar infiltration.

Findings:

Conservative treatment with Vancomycin and other antifungals/antibiotics over 40 days led to abscess resolution.
Serial chest X-rays demonstrated gradual diminution of the abscess, with a residual air cyst noted.
Associated osteitis of the second phalange in the affected finger also showed improvement.

Implications:

This case underscores the efficacy of prolonged conservative antibiotic therapy in pediatric lung abscess.
It emphasizes the importance of identifying and treating the primary source of infection.
Surgical intervention is reserved for complex or recurrent cases in pediatric patients.
