    Summary

This study investigated testicular endocrine function in 12 patients with male pseudohermaphroditism. Most patients showed normal fetal testicular function, with only two exhibiting evidence of fetal testicular failure.

    Area of Science:

    • Endocrinology
    • Reproductive Biology
    • Genetics

    Background:

    • Male pseudohermaphroditism (MPH) is a disorder of sex development.
    • Understanding testicular endocrine function is crucial for diagnosing and managing MPH.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate testicular endocrine function in post-pubertal patients with 46 XY MPH.
    • To identify potential causes of impaired testicular function in these patients.

    Main Methods:

    • Serum hormone levels (androgens, LH, FSH) were measured using radioimmunoassay.
    • Patients were categorized based on pubertal development (feminized, masculinized) or pre-pubertal castration.

    Main Results:

    • Patients feminized during puberty often exhibited absence of the androgen receptor.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • One masculinized patient had deficient testosterone secretion without an identifiable enzymatic defect.
  • One pre-pubertally castrated patient had a 17,20-desmolase deficiency.
  • Conclusions:

    • Evidence of fetal testicular failure was found in only 2 out of 12 MPH patients.
    • Testicular feminization is frequently linked to androgen receptor issues.
    • Other endocrine or enzymatic defects can contribute to MPH phenotypes.
