No randomized controlled trials were found comparing open and endoscopic surgery for pharyngeal pouch treatment. Therefore, evidence on the effectiveness of these surgical approaches is currently lacking.

Background:

Pharyngeal pouch (Zenker's diverticulum) is a pharyngeal outpouching causing dysphagia, regurgitation, and potential complications.
Management options include conservative and surgical approaches, with surgical methods divided into open and endoscopic procedures.
Open surgery was historically dominant, while endoscopic techniques have gained popularity, yet comparative effectiveness remains unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of open versus endoscopic surgical interventions for pharyngeal pouch management.

Main Methods:

A systematic search of major databases (Cochrane, MEDLINE, EMBASE) was conducted up to September 2004.
Eligibility criteria focused on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing surgical interventions for pharyngeal pouch.
Trial selection and data extraction were performed by three independent reviewers.

Main Results:

No randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were identified that met the inclusion criteria for this review.
The lack of RCTs indicates a significant gap in high-quality evidence.

Conclusions:

High-quality RCTs are needed to compare the effectiveness of endoscopic and open surgical procedures for pharyngeal pouch.
Current evidence does not support the superiority of one endoscopic technique over another or over open surgery.
