Background:

  • The Seventh Report of the Joint National Commission (JNC 7) defined prehypertension as blood pressure between 120-139 mm Hg systolic or 80-89 mm Hg diastolic.
  • Prehypertension represents a significant risk category for cardiovascular events.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the association between prehypertension and major cardiovascular events.
  • To analyze cardiovascular disease risk in a population-based cohort with prehypertensive blood pressure levels.

Main Methods:

  • Longitudinal analysis of participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey I (1971-1975).
  • Follow-up for 18 years to track major cardiovascular disease events.
  • Cox proportional hazard ratios were used to assess relative risks for cardiovascular disease, stroke, myocardial infarction, and heart failure.
