Summary

This study found no significant differences between mechanical and computerized axiographs for recording mandibular movements. However, manual measurement errors limit the conclusion that data from both devices are compatible.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare measurements of mandibular rotational and translation movements between mechanical and computerized axiographs.
  • To assess the reliability of axiographic data recording methods.
  • To inform clinical practice regarding the use of different axiographic technologies.

Main Methods:

  • 31 subjects without temporomandibular disorder signs underwent axiographic tracings using both mechanical and computerized devices.
  • Standardized opening, closing, protrusive, and retrusive movements were recorded.
  • Angular and linear measurements were statistically compared using the Wilcoxon signed rank test; measurement error was assessed using Chronbach's alpha.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant differences were found between mechanical and computerized axiographs for recorded parameters.
  • Mean opening/closing angles ranged from 52.4-54.2 degrees; protrusive/retrusive angles ranged from 50.1-54.9 degrees.
  • Mean opening/closing distances were 11.4-12.3 mm; protrusive/retrusive distances were 8.2-8.7 mm.

Conclusions:

  • Nonsignificant differences were observed between the tested mechanical and computerized axiographs.
  • Potential minor discrepancies may stem from manual measurement errors inherent in mechanical axiograph tracings.
  • Due to precision limitations of the manual device, compatibility between mechanical and computerized axiograph data cannot be definitively concluded.
