Summary

A rare case of nephrotic syndrome and acute renal failure in a young woman was caused by combined membranous nephropathy and crescentic glomerulonephritis. Treatment with steroids and cyclophosphamide stabilized her kidney function.

Area of Science:

  • Nephrology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Glomerular diseases commonly present with nephrotic syndrome or acute renal failure.
  • Causes include acute tubular necrosis, renal vein thrombosis, and tubulointerstitial nephritis.
  • Primary glomerular diseases combined with crescentic glomerulonephritis infrequently cause this clinical picture.

Observation:

  • A young woman without systemic disease presented with nephrotic syndrome and acute renal failure.
  • Her condition was secondary to membranous nephropathy with superimposed crescentic glomerulonephritis.

Findings:

  • The patient received immunosuppressive therapy with steroids and cyclophosphamide.
  • Renal function stabilized after two months of follow-up.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • This case highlights a rare but serious cause of nephrotic syndrome and acute renal failure.
  • Combined glomerular and crescentic disease requires prompt immunosuppression.
  • Early diagnosis and treatment can lead to stabilization of renal function in complex glomerular diseases.
