Accidental inhalation of superheated steam can be fatal, especially in children within enclosed spaces. Autopsy findings reveal respiratory tract damage and hypoxia as the cause of death.
Area of Science:
- Forensic Pathology
- Toxicology
- Pediatric Medicine
Background:
- Accidental steam inhalation is a rare cause of death.
- This report details two pediatric cases of fatal steam inhalation in a closed environment.
Observation:
- Autopsies revealed petechial hemorrhages in the brain, lungs, and heart.
- Macroscopic examination showed epiglottis congestion and lung edema.
- Microscopic analysis indicated tracheal mucosal swelling, edema, epithelial loss, and coagulative necrosis.
Findings:
- The observed pathological findings, including respiratory tract damage and pulmonary edema, are consistent with fatal hypoxia.
- The primary cause of death in these cases was attributed to accidental superheated steam inhalation.
Implications:
- The respiratory tract mucosa is highly vulnerable to superheated steam vapors.
- Fatal hypoxia can occur rapidly, within minutes, following steam inhalation in confined spaces.

Methods of Sterilization I: Physical Methods
Steam sterilization uses non-toxic, low-cost moist heat in the form of saturated steam under pressure, which is fast, microbicidal, and sporicidal, and quickly warms and penetrates fabrics. Autoclaves, or steam sterilizers, expose each item to direct steam contact for a predetermined time at the necessary...
