Summary

Phase contrast MRI reliably measures blood flow in aortic stenosis, showing minimal impact from image positioning. This technique is a robust tool for evaluating this valvular pathology.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Imaging
  • Medical Physics
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Phase contrast MRI (PC-MRI) is a developing technique for assessing valvular heart disease.
  • The influence of imaging plane position and valvular pathology on PC-MRI velocity measurements requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of variable image positioning on velocity measurements in aortic stenosis using PC-MRI.
  • To compare velocity maps with image correlation methods for assessing valve orifice area calculations.

Main Methods:

  • Quantitative flow images were acquired using PC-MRI in four parallel planes in patients with aortic stenosis (n=22).
  • Velocity-time integrals (VTIs) were computed, and cross-correlation methods were used to compare flow profiles at different positions.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Analysis focused on supravalvular and subvalvular regions to assess jet alignment and position dependency.
  • Main Results:

    • Supravalvular VTIs showed strong correlation (R=0.96) and comparable values across positions.
    • Subvalvular VTIs demonstrated a linear relationship (R=0.93) with a 23% mean difference.
    • Cross-correlations indicated predominantly concentric jets, with measurements showing relative insensitivity to imaging plane position, especially in the aortic region.

    Conclusions:

    • Phase contrast MRI measurements of aortic stenosis are largely insensitive to imaging plane position.
    • The study confirms PC-MRI as a dependable method for evaluating aortic stenosis.
    • Correlation methods effectively quantify flow profile similarity and alignment in PC-MRI data.
