Area of Science:

  • Public health
  • Psychology
  • Social sciences

Background:

  • Many research questions examine relationships between categorical outcomes and continuous predictors.
  • Often, both outcome and predictor variables are unobserved (latent).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a statistical model for analyzing relationships between latent categorical outcomes and latent continuous predictors.
  • To extend the latent class regression model to incorporate latent predictors.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized maximum likelihood estimation.
  • Described two numerical methods: Monte Carlo Expectation-Maximization and Gaussian Quadrature with Quasi-Newton algorithm.
  • Conducted a simulation study to evaluate model performance.

Main Results:

  • The developed model successfully handles latent categorical outcomes and latent continuous predictors.
  • Simulation results demonstrated the model's behavior across various scenarios.
  • The model was applied to adolescent health data, predicting eating disorder risk latent classes from latent body satisfaction.

Conclusions:

  • The proposed model provides a robust framework for analyzing complex relationships involving latent variables in social sciences.
  • This approach enhances the understanding of unobserved factors influencing health outcomes.
