Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Medicine
  • Parasitology
  • Gynecologic Pathology

Background:

  • Infertility affects a significant portion of the population, with diverse underlying causes.
  • Endocervical polyps are common gynecological findings, typically benign.

Observation:

  • An asymptomatic 38-year-old woman presented with infertility.
  • A gynecological examination revealed an endocervical polyp (1.0 x 0.8 x 0.5 cm).

Findings:

  • Microscopic examination of the polyp biopsy showed granulomas.
  • These granulomas contained viable eggs of Schistosoma mansoni.

Implications:

  • This case suggests Schistosoma mansoni infection as a potential, albeit rare, cause of infertility.
