Background:

  • Three male patients (62-78 years) with cardiovascular insufficiency were diagnosed with ischemic colitis.
  • Colonic biopsies revealed granulation tissue with stromal cells exhibiting nuclear enlargement, pleomorphism, and hyperchromasia.
  • Some cells showed cytomegalovirus (CMV)-like nuclear inclusions.

Findings:

  • Stromal cells in ischemic colitis can display significant morphologic alterations, mimicking viral inclusions or ganglion cells.
  • These changes are likely due to hypoxia, inflammation, and regenerative processes in response to injury.
