Area of Science:

  • Healthcare Management
  • Nursing Practice Models
  • Quality Improvement

Background:

  • Hospitals face financial pressures and evolving reimbursement landscapes.
  • Reassessing practice models is crucial for maintaining competitiveness and quality of care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of a nursing skill mix practice model on personnel costs and quality of care.
  • To assess patient and nurse satisfaction with the skill mix model.

Main Methods:

  • A pre- and post-test quasi-experimental design was employed.
  • Data were collected via questionnaires from participants at a Taiwanese teaching hospital in 2003.
  • Patient satisfaction with nursing care and nurse satisfaction with nursing aides were measured.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • The skill mix model (22 nurses, 7 aides) resulted in 2.7% lower costs compared to using 25 nurses.
  • Statistically significant improvements were observed in patient satisfaction and nurse satisfaction with aides.
  • No significant differences were found in the incidence of falls or medication error rates.

Conclusions:

  • The nursing skill mix practice model is a viable strategy for reducing costs while enhancing the quality of clinical nursing care.
  • This study provides a reference for hospital nursing practice reform, particularly the first implementation in Taiwan.
  • The model demonstrates potential for improving both operational efficiency and patient/staff satisfaction.
