Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. Summary

This study examined hemangiosarcoma in young horses (<= 3 years). Early diagnosis and surgical resection offer the best chance for cure, though some cases may resolve spontaneously.

Background:

  • Hemangiosarcoma is a rare cancer in horses.
  • Young horses may present unique clinical characteristics for this neoplasm.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize hemangiosarcoma in horses aged 3 years or younger.
  • To identify clinical and diagnostic features of this rare condition in young equines.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of medical records (1982-2004) for horses <= 3 years with histopathologic diagnosis of hemangiosarcoma.
  • Analysis of clinical presentation, physical examination findings, laboratory results, and diagnostic imaging.

Main Results:

  • Eleven cases were identified, predominantly Thoroughbreds.
  • Common presentations included cutaneous/leg swellings or joint effusion, with signs of tachycardia, fever, and depression.
  • Laboratory findings included anemia, hyper/hypofibrinogenemia, thrombocytopenia, and neutrophilic leukocytosis.
  • Diagnostic imaging was not definitive; early histopathologic diagnosis was crucial.

Conclusions:

  • Early histopathologic diagnosis is vital for potential cure through surgical resection of localized masses.
  • Spontaneous resolution occurred in two cases.
  • Observation may be warranted for medically stable horses with non-interfering masses.
