Area of Science:

  • Medicine
  • Gastroenterology
  • Pulmonology

Background:

  • Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a serious eating disorder with increasing prevalence, primarily affecting young females.
  • AN can lead to various medical complications, some of which are rare and poorly understood.

Observation:

  • A case report details a 20-year-old female patient diagnosed with AN, restrictive subtype.
  • The patient presented with significant weight loss (41.6%), low BMI (10.8), and amenorrhea.
  • During hospitalization, the patient exhibited audible crunching sounds in the neck and upper chest.

Findings:

  • Imaging revealed diffuse soft tissue emphysema, including subcutaneous emphysema, pneumomediastinum, and pneumoretroperitoneum.
  • Bicytopenia was also noted as a rare complication in this AN patient.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The diffuse soft tissue emphysema resolved completely within 21 days of hospitalization.
  • Implications:

    • Diffuse soft tissue emphysema in AN patients appears to be a benign condition.
    • This rare complication necessitates a relatively short hospital stay for resolution.
    • Highlights the importance of recognizing and managing diverse medical complications associated with anorexia nervosa.
