Summary

Erectile dysfunction affects over 30% of males with pelvic injuries. Impotence onset is linked to pelvic injury type (B and C), but not trauma severity. Phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors effectively treat this sexual dysfunction.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Trauma Surgery
  • Sexual Medicine

Context:

  • Pelvic injuries are a significant cause of erectile dysfunction (ED).
  • Understanding the relationship between injury type and ED is crucial for patient management.
  • Assessing treatment efficacy for post-traumatic ED is essential.

Purpose:

  • To determine ED prevalence in males with pelvic injuries.
  • To investigate the correlation between pelvic injury type and ED onset.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors in treating ED.

Summary:

  • Erectile dysfunction affects 31.5% of males with pelvic injuries.
  • ED onset is significantly associated with pelvic ring injury types B and C (p=0.023).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Peroral PDE5 inhibitor treatment was successful in 85% of patients, improving International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) scores.
  • Impact:

    • Identifies specific pelvic injury types (B and C) associated with higher ED risk.
    • Highlights the efficacy of PDE5 inhibitors as a first-line treatment for post-traumatic ED.
    • Recommends early patient counseling regarding potential sexual dysfunction after specific pelvic injuries.
